Empowered Women in Small Business Spotlight: Daughters Legacy

November is National Small Business month; a month dedicated to celebrating the contributions and successes to those who are small business owners and are growing the nations’ economy. In honor of this month, Nats and I decided to create the Empowered Women in Small Business Spotlight series. We collaborated with an amazing group of fiercely talented women entrepreneurs, who have shown us that with passion, love, and resilience anything is possible.  These successful women entrepreneurs are creating better lives for themselves and paving the path for tomorrow’s women business owners, while also becoming powerful contributors to gender equality. We hope you get inspired by their stories, and that you remember that any dream can become a reality if you work hard for it.

The first time I heard about Daughters legacy Co, was a few months ago, when a good friend of mine introduced me to Josephine, one of its co-founders. We started talking about our passions, and she told me about the wonderful business  she had created along with her two partners and friends Johanne and Lindsey. I was so excited to hear their story and how this business came to be, that I immediately thought of them when we decided to have the Small Business spotlight.  Nats and I were so happy we got to meet with these ladies for some photos, and we got the opportunity to get inspired by their energy. We have no doubt they will be successful in everything they work on. I hope you find their mission as inspiring as I did.

All lasting business is built on friendship. - Alfred Montapert

Tell our  readers about you.

This company is built on the foundation of community, charity, and change starting by empowering all generations of females—from babies, young girls and teenagers to every day women, their friends, and the generations that came before them.

Our foundation of community begins with three friends that came together to start a business, our first supporters being our family and friends, and the fact that every person who purchases a product is part of a give back movement. The core message is that we can be united as a village. Our foundation of charity begins with the belief that our purpose must go beyond profit. 10% of every purchase you make is donated to one of our selected charities to empowering her future through education.

Lastly, we are creating the change we want to see for every female.  Creating a world where women are connected to a network of powerful females from all generations. Creating a world where women feel empowered and confident in who they are and what they can contribute.

What inspired you to start a small business?

Daughters Legacy Co. was founded by three friends that have known each other for over half of their lives and are now pursuing their dreams of entrepreneurship and their passion to empower women.

We were motivated by:

  • A sense of independence and having the opportunity to build something meaningful the way we want it to be built.
  • A desire to see a need for change in the world and wanting to be a part of the solution.
  • The opportunity to be an example of devoted mothers, with successful careers, who never stop challenging ourselves to dream big and accomplish goals.

What specific advice would you have for young women who would like to become an entrepreneur? Are there specific advantages, disadvantages of being a women business owner?

Figure out what your passion is first, because when the business gets difficult and you’re not sure if you should continue, then your “why” will keep you going. Starting a business is a bit of a roller coaster experience – there are high and low points which can be both exciting and nerve wracking. Your passion and purpose for starting the business will keep you focused on your ultimate goals.

Specific advantages of having three female co founders for our business is that we can leverage each other’s strengths and incorporate multiple perspectives. Like the old saying says, “If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far go together”.

What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?

Just do it. Don’t overthink it. Don’t tell yourself all the reasons why not. Just launch and be flexible along the way.
